Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is an evidenced-based adaptation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that includes concepts and skills that are a good fit for those who tend to process analytically and want a structured way to frame their experiences as well as those who struggle with mood and emotion regulation issues, whether it's depression, anxiety, impulsivity, etc.

Because the "dialectical" portion of DBT allows more room for seemingly incompatible ideas, DBT can help people who have been confused or frustrated when they have been told to "just get over it" or "stop thinking negative thoughts."  This kind of cognitive adjustment may be sufficient for some clients but others may need a little more help with how to make their brains and body comply.

The structure of DBT encourages the client to participate individual therapy as well as a weekly group skills class that gives the client the opportunity to learn concrete skills in a structured setting.  The group members also learn from each other's experiences and scaffold each other's learning process.  These skills are then used by the individual therapist to teach the client how to apply the skills and execute those changes in the real world.
